History

For years Clearwater the Tocobagan Indians lived in the city of Clearwater. Some colonists started to settle down here. One such colonist was Dr. Odet Philippe. Soon around 1835, the US Army started to construct Fort Harrison during the Seminole wars.

The fort was originally constructed on Clearwater Harbor which eventually became the part of Harbor Oaks. Very soon, the population of this area grew. Some of the oldest inhabitants were Stevenson and McMullen families. The name Clearwater had been derived from a spring flowing nearby. The City Hall building is constructed at the same site.

The first road adjoining Clearwater and Tampa was constructed in 1849, which facilitated transportation between two cities. The commuters were largely benefited due to this construction. The development of Clearwater took place in the nineteenth century.

The first railroad line was laid in 1888. James E. Crane became the first mayor of Clearwater. Clearwater grew as a popular tourist destination after the completion of the Belleview Biltmore. Located just south of Clearwater, this fantastic hotel caters to the need of a huge number of tourists who visit Clearwater.

One of the notable features of Clearwater is its population growth. Every winter the population increases to 1000. The first newspaper of Clearwater was Clearwater Sun which was published in 1914. To join the city with Clearwater Beach in the west, a bridge was constructed in 1915. Clearwater beach has become a favorite place for most of the beach lovers. Recently a new bridge has been constructed known as the Clearwater Memorial Causeway.
